October 10-14

Students are continuing to work on bonding. Monday will cover covalent bonding. Tuesday the students will be taking the ASVAB. Wednesday will cover empirical and molecular formulas. Students will get a study guide on Friday and a test will be next Tuesday as of right now.

Week 8

The students will be working on ACT prep on Monday and continue the bonding chapter on Tuesday. Wednesday most of the juniors will be gone on an Arts & Humanities field trip. We will work on naming ionic compounds on Thursday and start covalent molecules on Friday. Of course this can always change. The nine weeks ends Friday and Fall Break begins.

Week 7

Students were given a study guide on Friday which is due tomorrow (Monday). We will go over the study guide and review for the test on the Periodic Table, which will be on Tuesday.  Wednesday is club day and depending on how many are out, we may start the next chapter with a lab on Wednesday. If too many are out for club meetings, we will start on Thursday. Our next unit is the structure of matter and we will be looking at ionic and covalent bonding.  If we start do the lab on Wednesday, homework will be given on Thursday and Friday. However, if we don't do the lab until Thursday, homework will be on Friday only.

Week 6

Students are continuing the unit on The Periodic Table. On Monday the students will be introduced to Kaplan, which is an ACT Preparation program to increase test scores and provide the students with test taking strategies. The rest of the week will consist of finishing up chapter 5, a lab on Wednesday and a test on Friday.  With only three weeks left in the quarter students are encouraged to get extra credit in as soon as possible.

Week 5

Students took the atomic structure test on Friday. They will get those back and we will go over them on Tuesday. We will then begin the unit on the periodic table. Students will learn how the table is organized and patterns. If everything goes according to plan, there will be a lab on Friday. Please check progress reports and call me if we need to discuss your child's grade.

Week 4

We have started atomic structure and electron configuration. On Monday we will go over the homework from Friday and discuss Flame Test lab. The lab will be on Tuesday, study guide on Wednesday, review for test on Thursday and test on Friday.

Week 3

Class is well under way and going great! My students are all wonderful and I look forward to seeing them each day. They received a study guide on Friday, which was also picture day, but hopefully had plenty of time to work on it in class. This study guide is due Monday and we will go over it for review and answer any questions. The first test in on Tuesday over Matter, Mixtures, and Changes. There are 3 extended response questions on the study guide and should be answered in paragraph form. On Wednesday, we will begin the unit on Atomic Structure. If all goes according to plan, the students will have their first lab with bunsen burners on Friday. Wednesday this week is club day (clubs meet each period). Please email or call me if you have an questions or concerns.

Week 2

Students are learning about Matter and Mixtures this week as well as Lab Safety. We did a chromatography activity on Tuesday and the students will be bringing a Lab Safety Contract home to be signed by the parent or guardian on Wednesday night. Please get these back as soon as possible, I must have them before the students can participate in chemistry labs. Also, the students will have a safety quiz on Thursday that they must score an 80% on or higher. They will retake the exam until the 80% is made. Expecting our first test early next week so stay tuned! Be sure to check out the link for photos on the home page!

First Week

Class is off to a great start!  Students learned about Scienitific Notation and this week will consist of learning about significant digits, measuring techniques for labs and learning to write a lab report correctly. Students will do a mini lab on Friday to aid in learning how to write a lab report and Thursday will consist of rotating around the lab performing various measuring skills. Students should bring book, paper and calculator EVERY day!
